After GM Arsenault did the unthinkable and 90% matched UFA Eric Johnson during free agency, it an unexpected move, Johnson was moved to the Surrey Rebels for stud defenseman Matthew Colliva who saw his last 3 seasons in an Atlanta Thrashers when GM Arsenault traded him 3 seasons ago.
GM Arsenault:
Well there is a couple of things you have to think about. #1 nobody is perfect and everybody makes mistakes. Eric deserves that large contract, and we wanted to believe we could maintain it for the next 2 seasons, but when looking at the players we had to sign this offseason it was almost impossible to be creative to stay under the salary cap, and even doing so, any short term injuries would put us over, to be safe we felt moving him was the best idea. #2 it was a calculated risk in hopes we could trade him if we couldn't stay under the cap. When you are about to lose a free agent with that kind of talent for nothing, you have no choice but to offer him the contract in hopes you can get something for him later on, and at this time, we got a young stay at home defenseman that we believe will fill a hole that we have on the blue line.

Matthew Colliva was the first trade GM Arsenault made when he first entered the league sending him to Atlanta for John Bradley who won the Bill Masterton Trophy with his first season in Montreal, and Anthony Marchant who was nominated for the same award last season. Both played well in Montreal but moved to strengthen the teams future.

Colliva is expected to play alot of minutes this season and help the teams struggling Penalty Kill from last season.
