Winnipeg trades with Baltimore

The second trade that was completed last week by Winnipeg management was done with the Baltimore Thunder organization.

GM Clow had been very insistent in trying to obtain the services of Viktor Taratukhin from the Jets. Losing the offensive ability of Ken Harris was already hurting the Jets offensive power, Taratukhin was not going to be an easy target.

Considering all the possible RFA's in Winnipeg, GM Thouin needed to free some cap space. Scott Andrews then became expandable. Unfortunately for him, he became the target of a possible trade. Even though he is still a very valuable defenseman and arguable the best the lest has ever seen, Andrews was involved in a trade that sent him to Baltimore. With him, Taratukhin left for the east coast expansion team.

In return for Taratukhin and Andrews, Winnipeg received a good sniper in Dave Sikorski, 28 years old and pretty inexpensive at less than 300 000$ per season for this season and the next. Sikorski stepped out of the plane in Winnipeg with Morgan Samuelsson, a highly defensive skilled defenseman, 29 years old and about a million a year.

The Jets also received the Thunder's second round pick in the next junior draft. Considering that Winnipeg had given up their first rounder in the Montreal trade, getting Baltimore's second round pick is a decent trade off given that the picks might be less than 10 ranks away from each other.

This second trade came to stabilize the Winnipeg offense which was weakened by the release of Ken Harris earlier this season. But, all in all, Winnipeg freed up over 16 million dollars in salary cap space and adding less than 1.5. A pretty good move considering that players like Kowalski, Fulcher, Litvinenko, Fisher, Caldwell, Kahnberg and Nepryayev are all up for contract extensions this season. Winnipeg's payroll will eventually go up by at least 10% next season with all the contract extensions, so the freeing up of 16+ million in salary pretty much came as a blessing.
