Winnipeg steals Baltimore's thunder

While a lot of the buzz around the ANHS this season was directed towards the Baltimore Thunder and Stephen Clow, GM Thouin's Winnipeg Jets showed the rookie GM that it takes more than just a buzz to be a real contender. Winnipeg quickly ousted the Thunder tonight with a sweep in the Morin Conference Finals.

This will be the first time since season 3 (!!!) that the Jets reach the finals! That year, they faced the Buffalo Sabres powerhouse that won its first of three consecutive cups. Before that, the Jets had won the cup in the inaugural season of the league. But since season 4, the Phoenix/Winnipeg franchise had never gone further than the second round in the playoffs. Needless to say that the crowd in Winnipeg went wild in the streets outside Whiteout Coliseum after tonight's win.

Without a doubt now, Kris Miller's acquisition from Vermont near the trade deadline made all the difference at this point. Although the Jets came close to missing the playoffs at the very last minute, the team started playing inspired hockey and Miller held the fort. He has shown a lot of leadership and although his playoffs stats might not equal MVP numbers, his teammated can vouch on his contribution to the team so far since joining the Jets.

For now, Winnipeg is waiting for the winner of the Edmonton/Atlanta series. Whoever they will face in the finals, they will be ready to play as well as the first 3 series and hopefully hoist the cup!

Congratulations to Clow on his rookie season performance! It's never easy to come in a league with an expansion franchise, but you have proven what you are capable of. Hope you can manage more good seasons like this one!
