9 in a row...who will stop the Jets?

Messagepar Winnipeg » 29 Nov 2016, 01:37

Their last loss came on day 43 when the San Antonio Bulls were visiting Winnipeg and served a 5-1 defeat to the locals.

Since then?

Nine. NINE! 9! Wins in a row!

What is so exceptional about 9 wins in a row? Nothing really. It has happened numerous times in the league's history. But, Winnipeg was struglling to find rythm since the beginning of the season. They had not dominated their opposition in the first 29 games of the season, except for a 6-0 win against Vermont. But since their last loss to San Antonio, Winnipeg has scored 49 goals, averaging 5.4 goals scored per game and allowed 27 for an average of 3 per game. Not stellar defence, but when you're scoring over 5 goals per game, who cares if you allow 3!

Mark Major and Ryan Caldwell have been piling up the points in that 9-game stretch. Major scored 5 goals and added 16 assists for a total of 21 points. But the best came from Caldwell. In those 9 games, he scored no less than 13 goals, including 3 hats tricks in 3 consecutive games on top of adding 9 assists for a total of 22 points! If we add their linemate's point tally (Magnus Kahnberg has 3 goals and 6 assists), it sums up to 21 goals and 31 assists for the Winnipeg first line in the last 9 games.

But the offense is not only coming from the first line. Even though they scored 21 goals, the rest of the team combined for 28 goals. Everyone is contributing to the team's performance and Kris Miller's great goaltending has propelled the Jets 6 points ahead of Montreal for the lead in the Haley Conference.

Kris Miller celebrated his 20th win of the season 2 days ago against Knoxville. If he keeps this up, he may well get 40 wins for the first time in his career.

The Jets are currently on a 4 in 4 stretch. They beat the Reign 5-3 in Denver last night with Larocque in nets. Miller will be back in action for the next game in Quebec and probably against Toronto. Larocque may see some more action in the 4th game when the Jets return home to face Las Vegas. They will then be able to rest while they wait for the biggest competition this season as the Montreal Canadiens will be visiting on Day 64.

Is any of these teams going to stop the red-white-and-blue machine? The Jets are flying high and have one objective this season: A second Thouin Cup in a row!
