Jets will face Knoxville in first round

With Boston's loss against Quebec tonight, the Jets got the confirmation that they will face the Knoxville Rink Rats in the first round of the playoffs, which are bound to start Monday night.

During the regular season, the Jets went 5-1-0 against the Rink Rats. The only game they lost was the first game between both teams this season, which was played in Knoxville on Day 17. The Rats won that game 5-2 with Chuck Hamilton getting the first star of the game with a goal and an assist.

After that game, the Jets controlled the rest of the season series between both teams. They went 5-0, scoring 27 goals (5.4 average per game) and allowing 16 (3.2 average per game). They faced each other for the last time on Day 88 when the Jets won in overtime by a score of 6 to 5.

Offensively, Knoxville can definitely give the Jets a good run. The problem is their defense. Knoxville is the team that allowed the most goals in the league, by a margin of 18 goals with the second worse team (still one game to play as this was written). On the other hand, Winnipeg's defense is second in the league and their offense is first. At first sight, it doesn't look really good for the Rats. So long as Kris Miller will be on top of his game, there isn't much of a chance for Knoxville to get anywhere in this series.

On special units, Winnipeg is 5th on the power play and Knoxville 14th. The Jets have the 3rd best penalty kill in the league, even though they rank 14th for team discipline. Knoxville has the 4th worst penaly kill in the league, and they are the second most penalized team in the league. They will definitely need to stay out of the penalty box if they want to stay in the game. Major, Caldwell and Litvinenko have combined for 42 power play goals with one more game to play.

Winnipeg's roster will need to be on the lookout for Knoxville's checking ability. Although they rank poorly in most team stats categories this season, they are first in the league for hits per game. While it might not make much of a difference in the game results, Winnipeg will want to make sure that they stay away from injuries to key players.

Winnipeg is ready to defend their championship. The real season starts Monday. Let's drop the puck!
