Game 81: Will the Jets finally clinch?

Messagepar Winnipeg » 03 Sep 2017, 05:45

After a tough loss last night in Ottawa, the Jets were once again facing the Senators, this time on home ice for their 81st game of the season. They still, only need a solo point in order to clinch a playoff spot and a chance to defend their double championship.

It was a crazy first period in tonight's game. No less than 6 goals were scored and neither team could actually gain momentum. By the end of the first period, the score was 3-3. All six goals were scored in 5 minutes and 14 seconds. Winnipeg had two 1-goal leads, followed by back to back goals by the Sens who took the lead, before losing it less than a minute later.

In the second period, the Sens were the only team to score. Crevier and Kuhl gave Ottawa a 2-goal lead and hopes of a home win for the Jets were starting to slowly fade away.

But, coach Mandrope gave his players a piece of his mind during the second intermission. Some journalists reported a lot of screaming coming from the Winnipeg locker room, although no one could decipher.

It seemed to work...

The Jets took to the ice like maniacs in the third period. First off, Litvinenko scored his 43th of the year. 5-4 Sens. Major followed with his 44th, tying the game at 5. Two minutes later, Nick Fisher scored his 8th, giving the Jets a one goal lead. And Jim Henkle topped off the win for the Jets, scoring his 6th at 13:59.

Kris Miller stopped all 17 shots he faced in the third period and the Jets would win the game 7-5. It's not a pretty score, but the important thing is the "X" that appeared next to the Jets in the Haley Conference standings.

The Jets are now 5th in the conference with a single game to play. As this point, it is impossible to predict who they will face in the first round as there is only 6 points between first and 7th in the standings.

Winnipeg will play their last game against Nashville on the last day of the regular season. They will benefit from a 2-day break before finishing the season at home against a potential playoff rival.
