S24 Free Agent Report

Messagepar Winnipeg » 02 Déc 2017, 16:58

The Jets management was very active this season on the free agent market. This was definitely one of the seasons where GM Thouin was most proactive when it came to trying to add players using free agency. Some future of the team was sacrificed in order to get players to join the Winnipeg organization. Let's hope that it will actually pay dividends.

Here is the Free Agent report for the Winnipeg Jets

Two new players will join the Jets as free agents. First off, goalie Tomas Jansson. With Mario Larocque commanding a 5M+ salary last season, it was clear that his demands would be too high for the team's liking in this free agency period. Sure enough, he left Winnipeg for Vermont with a new 1-year contract worth 2.7 million. That left the Jets with no official backup goalie. In comes Tomas Jansson. 30 years old, restricted free agent. He served as #1 goalie in Philadelphia for the past 3 seasons, but GM Thouin thought that he would be better fitted for a backup role to Kris Miller. He could easily play 20 games and win at least half of those, which is what you would expect from a good backup. Jansson ended up costing a second round pick with his signing, but Jets management like his 600 000 contract and he will be in Winnipeg for the next 3 seasons. Along with Miller, this gives the Jets one, if not the best goalie combo in the league.

Tim Green was also acquired from the San Antonio Bulls as a restricted free agent. He was acquired for 1 million for the next 4 seasons. Jets management saw this as a great deal, even though he cost a first and a second round pick. Green might come in handy in replacing Fulcher in the defensive center role. Fulcher might be called upon to take up more offensive tasks this season. Either way, Green is a great defensive center who will take control of the first PK unit.

Other noticeables are Ianero, Barber and Reifenberger who all signed new contracts with the team as unrestricted free agents. Raykhel, Duden and Leo all signed minor league contracts and will report to Wichita for the beginning of the season.

Although the Jets tried to make a big splash during free agency, none of the contracts offered ended up with an official signature. GM Thouin had offered 7 million to Derek Gibson for his to play his last pro season in Winnipeg, but instead, he stayed with the Blues for 6.3. That is respectable, considering that he has played with St-Louis for 13 seasons now! He will become the first player to play 1800 games in the league should he stay healthy all season! An incredible feat!

Offers were also made on other players and didn't reach an agreement, but in the end, GM Thouin is satisfied with the way free agency went this season. We shall see how it all boils down once the season starts!
