Winnipeg acquires Hohener from Montreal

GM Thouin was not able to acquire the offensive players he needed during free agency. Regardless, he wasn't gonig to let things go to waste. Offense is still needed on this roster to improve the second line and a big trade went down with the Montreal Canadiens earlier today.

Winnipeg acquired the services of Martin Hohener from the Habs. In return, the Jets send Paul Reifenberger, recently resigned as a UFA by the team, and Marvis Connaughton.

GM Thouin commented:
It's always hard to evaluate a trade and think that adding a 9 million player to your roster will definitely help you. Martin has proved that he can help offensively. He has scored 114 goals in the last 3 seasons. Yes, his salary might be a high, but it will be for one season. We are definitely hoping that we can negotiate a new contract when he becomes free agent after this season. But we are working hard to make this team a contender again this season. Last season was unacceptable per our standards and we want to change that. Martin will be of great help and we are happy to welcome him to the team.

The trade will definitely help the Jets offensively. Considering that Reifenberger has scored 43 goals in the same span of time that Hohener scored 114, it was almost a no brainer that this trade be done. Hohener's salary was definitely a concern for the Winnipeg organization, but if the team goes all the way, no one will remember that his salary was so high when they hoist the cup.

As for Connaughton, he leaves for Montreal, not having improved close to what the organization was hoping out of him. A 2-time 100 point scorer in juniors, Connaughton never improved his game enough to become the offensive power that he was in juniors. He obviously became expendable when Hohener's name was mentioned by GM Arsenault in a possible trade.

Let's hope that the addition of Hohener will bring the offense the Jets are desperately looking for in order to improve this season.
